Sigma Phi Epsilon house fire

13May08

The Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity house at 237 Langdon St. went up in flames last night. All 25 residents escaped safely, and 3 firefighters were treated for minor injuries while battling the blaze. A Madison Metro bus provided shelter for the 25 residents during the night, and the Red Cross and UW Dean of Students office was on the scene as well. The fire started around 11:40pm, and was under control by 2:38am, though firefighters were still on scene putting out embers and hot spots well into the morning. Damage was estimated at $750,000, and the cause has not yet been determined.

Worst House In Madison “winner” unveiled

29Apr08

The Student Tenant Union unveiled its 2008 winner of the Worst House In Madison contest (617 Mendota Ct.) earlier today. Stop by over at Dane 101 for my full write-up and photos of the press conference and the “winning” house.

Before leading media representatives through a tour of her apartment, the current tenant, Karley Gifford, described her experience living with mice, a leaky roof, problems with locks and doorknobs, and an inadequate response from her landlord, Patrick Properties, to a pair of recent break-ins.

“I’d say the worst part about living in the Worst House In Madison is sleeping with the lights on because I’m afraid someone’s going to come in in the middle of the night,” Gifford explained.

Stay tuned…

07Apr08

Ok, so the upgrade to WordPress 2.5 really threw off my image posting workflow. I have to switch back into code monkey mode for a few days to get back to a system where I can shoot, process, and post seamlessly. Just FYI, the following shoots are queued for posting: BreatheFree Marshfield campaign shots (congrats to Marshfield on passing their smoking ban!), Russ Feingold speaking at the Union, the Midwest Social Forum teach-in, Adidas VP Gregg Nebel and SLACkers at a UW Labor Licensing Policy Committee meeting, and Pagee Go Go’s CD release party. Also on the horizon (if I ever have time): a wrap-up post of candidates coming through Madison before Wisconsin’s primary, and photos from my trip out to San Diego.

Coming soon, after I get the web design end of things back under control.

Rally in support of Tope Awe

31Mar08

April 1, 2008, 3pm UPDATE: From the Facebook group:

Dean Roberts of the School of Pharmacy sent the following message!

“I just received official word through Senator Kohl’s office that Tope AND her brother are being released from custody as we speak. The overall resolution remains temporary in nature, pending additional legal steps, but this is just what we were hoping to accomplish in the short run to allow Tope to return to school for this semester and, hopefully, beyond.”

“Thanks to all for your wisdom, legal guidance, and plain old positive energy and hard work. It all made a difference.”

Background info from the Badger Herald:

A University of Wisconsin graduate student was arrested late last week and risks deportation to Nigeria, her family said this weekend.

Tope Awe, a third-year graduate student in the UW School of Pharmacy, and her family were summoned to the U.S. Homeland Security office in Milwaukee Thursday. When Awe and her brother Gbenga Awe — a recent UW-Stevens Point graduate — arrived, both were unexpectedly arrested, her father Sam Awe told The Badger Herald.

A Facebook group has been created, as well as a survey and petition for collecting comments in support of Tope.
