Fuck dreamhost.com

15Jan08

I can no longer in good conscience recommend dreamhost.com to anybody, and will be switching my domain registrations and hosting services as soon as possible. Overnight, they erroneously billed their customers multiple times for multiple years of service to the tune of $7,500,000+. I appear to be one of the lucky ones, “only” having $238 or so taken from me; there are multiple accounts of users facing upwards of $9,000 in erroneous charges, leading to overdrawn bank accounts, late mortgage payments and bounced utility checks (and the inevitable credit score hits), and erroneously suspended web accounts (for the people whose banks/credit card companies correctly refused these charges).

I knew that dreamhost.com is NOT known for their uptime or speed or reliability, but let’s face it - the price was right, and I was willing to deal with some bumps along the road. But this is no ordinary bump on the road - this is a straight-up carjacking, as far as I’m concerned. There are a tiny but utterly annoying minority of posts from other dreamhost.com customers who are determined to resolve their cognitive dissonance about this shitty hosting company by blaming other customers for this screw-up, something along the lines that we’re stupid for giving dreamhost.com our financial information. Well… congrats to those assholes that they don’t mind having someone illegitimately yoink hundreds or thousands of dollars from them, or don’t have to explain this screw-up to their clients and have it reflect poorly on them for recommending dreamhost.com, or don’t have to waste dozens of hours in the future researching new hosts and migrating their sites. Good for them, they are obviously better people than us and won’t mind spotting us a few hundred dollars to get by while dreamhost.com posts flippant, immature, unrepentant excuses on their blog.

If you’ve ever wanted to watch a major webhosting company collapse in spectacular fashion live, well… now’s your chance. FUCK DREAMHOST.COM. Congrats on hitting the big time RegisterFly.com style.
